This is part-rant, part-prompt from one of my friends. I wasn’t planning to publish it originally, but they talked me into doing it :)
To the Modern Evangelical Church,
One of the great things about being a Christian is that practically everyone outside the church either disagrees with you, dislikes you, hates you, and/or wants to and would kill you if they got a chance.
That’s not a exaggeration; it’s been proven again and again from history. The second evil men get the chance, they try to wipe out Christians. From Babylon to Rome, Israel to Germany, Russia to France, Great Britain to the Middle East, Africa to Indonesia, Christians have been ruthlessly slaughtered and unceasingly persecuted like no other group of people ever.
Then you, the modern church, comes along, doing everything in your power to make peace with the world, seeking the approval of those who would betray you the moment it became convenient.
You water down the Word of God, trimming away the parts that might offend. You refuse to stop evil men and women from profaning the church of God. You will not condemn something that’s not “politically correct” to condemn. You denounce everything that does not align itself with the will of the Left. You march in rallies alongside people who will suffer an eternity of fiery torture and the displeasure of God in Hell if they do not bow the knee to the Lord. You read the Bible and shamelessly deny and ignore parts you don’t agree with. You fill your pulpits with wolves in sheep’s clothing, destined for nothing more than condemnation on the Last Day.
Do you think the King of Glory—who was spit upon, despised, scourged, mocked, stripped completely naked, nailed to a cross, abandoned by all, lived in poverty, starved and beaten—endured all of this so that you could avoid an awkward conversation with your neighbor? So that you could feel comfortable in your pews, entertained by soft words that never call you to repentance? So that you could avoid controversy while the souls of men slip into eternal torment?
This happened to the only perfect man who ever lived, Lord of the universe, your Creator. And He took it all peacefully so that YOU, a filthy, sinful, wretched man, might have a chance at eternal life and joy.
Jesus didn’t die so that you could be liked.
Jesus didn’t rise from the grave so that you could be admired by the cultural elite.
Jesus didn’t send His apostles and countless Christians to their deaths so that you could build a brand on moral compromise.
So I can’t wait to hear your explanation for fudging on culture issues just to pacify your soft friends and church members……because you’re afraid of what they might say?? Let’s go back to the part where they pounded nails through the Son of God’s hands and hung him on a cross to suffocate and die the most tortuous death possible….and he stood firm.
When Jesus returns in glory, separating the sheep from the goats, will you stand before Him with trembling hands and stammer out that you feared the opinion of men, while He suffered unspeakable horrors for you at the hands of men? Will you tell the King of Kings that you compromised, that you softened His Word, that you chose the approval of a dying world over the eternal reward He suffered to give you?
Or will you be found faithful?
On that day, there will be no crowds to impress, no social movements to appease, and no worldly reputation to protect. Either you will serve Christ, or you will serve the world. But know this—if you choose the world, the world will still hate you when it no longer needs you.
Choose a master, and choose wisely.
